The transition from complex crater to peak-ring basin on the Moon: New observations from the Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter (LOLA) instrument

► We catalog and measure craters with complex and peak-ring morphologies on the Moon. ► The lunar trends in peak-ring and rim-crest diameters are similar to those on Mercury. ► Transitions in morphology are plausibly a function of changing melt volumes and depths of melting. ► Planetary parameters, gravity and mean impactor velocity, influence the final crater interior morphology.
