► We examined the effects of phosphate toxicity in obesity. ► Inducing phosphate toxicity in an obese mouse could reduce overall survival. ► Reducing serum phosphate levels from obese mice did not affect overall survival. ► In obesity-induced renal injury, phosphate toxicity may determine the outcome.
