► CP complex formation in bean and pea proceeded continuously despite of dark periods. ► Photochemical activity of beans increased with the structural differentiation. ► Photochemical activity of peas was not influenced significantly by PLB reformation. ► Full functionality of chloroplasts was reached earlier in beans than in peas.
