Isolation and characterization of biologically active alkaloids from marine actinobacteria Nocardiopsis sp. NCS1

Actinobacteria have special biotechnological importance since they produce chemically diverse compounds with a sample range of biological activity. In the present study the potential alkaloids producing marine actinobacterial strain NCS1 was isolated from the sediments of Nancowry Island, India which was identified as Nocardiopsis sp. based on chemotaxonomy, cultural, morphological and 16S rDNA sequencing. Further, the crude alkaloids were extracted and purified through column chromatography and characterized using a UV spectrophotometer and FT-IR spectrometer. It has potential antioxidant efficacy and cytotoxic effect against NCI-H460 cells. The highest antioxidant activity was observed at 100 µg/ml concentration for instance DPPH assay, total antioxidant, total reducing power, hydrogen peroxide, nitrous oxide and lipid peroxidation, respectively. Moreover, the cytotoxicity assay was done against NCI-H460 cell lines and IC50 value was found to be 40 μg/ml. These results suggest that Nocardiopsis sp. NCS1 has novel antioxidant, cytotoxic activity and it has to be further characterized to improve the pharmacological native marine metabolites.
