This paper deals with a glycerophosphate-based corrosion inhibitor (CI) to be applied to the surface of hardened concrete. The effectiveness of such a corrosion inhibitor is guaranteed only if its concentration reaches a sufficient level on the rebar surface. To assess the profile of penetration of the CI through the concrete cover, the reactions with cement matrix and its influence on the transfer properties are experimentally analysed and numerically modelled. The results show that the penetration of CI is controlled by the presence of portlandite, the moisture content of the concrete specimen and the duration of application of the CI.
► Penetration of a glycerophosphate-based corrosion inhibitor through concrete.
► Reaction of the CI with sound or carbonated cement matrix.
► Influence of the CI on the transfer properties.
► Numerical model to predict the penetration of the CI through unsaturated concrete.
