Epidural analgesia is used in more than 80 % of labouring women in France. The use of ultrasound is a technical improvement to make it reliable epidural catheter placement in parturient with difficult back. Combined spinal epidural analgesia is used occasionally to decrease the onset of action. Programmed Intermittent Epidural Bolus (PIEB) and Computer Integrated Patient Controlled Epidural Analgesia (CI-PCEA) are recently introduced techniques allowing to decrease local anaesthetic demand. Adjutants such as clonidine and neostigmine are less frequently used. Ambulation remains an option that is not always systematically applied.
