Lateral Subtalar Dislocation in the Trauma Room Setting

Subtalar dislocations are a relatively rare occurrence within the scope of orthopedic-related injuries; lateral subtalar dislocations are still even more uncommon. These injuries generally result from high-energy traumas and require timely reduction, with or without additional surgical intervention, to ensure favorable patient outcomes. The nurse practitioner can play several important roles in the trauma room setting, perioperatively, and in outpatient follow-up clinics to help ensure optimal outcomes. This article offers a brief case study and an overview of ankle anatomy and treatment regimens in understanding the role of the advanced practice nurse in caring for these patients.
