In recent years, scientific knowledge regarding the epidemiology of COPD has improved. Prevalence of COPD is increasing, especially in women. Aging and tobacco smoking are major risk factors for COPD, but recent evidence suggests that toxic exposures in the workplace or at home may contribute to the increased prevalence of COPD.
