Multiple oral condyloma acuminatum in a patient with HIV/AIDS - A case report

Condyloma acuminatum is a HPV-induced disease that affects the mucosa and skin of the anorectum and genitalia. This condition rarely is observed in the oral mucosa. The aim of this paper is to report a case of multiple condyloma acuminatum in the mouth of a man aged 37 years. The patient is a smoker, HIV positive, and used antiretroviral drugs irregularly. Physical examination revealed the presence of multiple lesions of vegetative aspect, whitish and arranged on the palate, tongue, lip, buccal mucosa and gums staining. An incisional biopsy was performed and histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis. The treatment plan included the surgical removal and chemical cauterization with trichloroacetic acid lesions. However, some recurrences occurred during the course of treatment. This case demonstrates the importance of correct diagnosis and planning for HPV-induced lesions due to the risk for recurrences.
