We aimed with this paper to describe in a practical perspective how to perform a MR arthrography of the upper limb (shoulder, elbow, and wrist) with particular emphasis on injection technique and MRI sequences. We detail fundamental points determining the choice of contrast medium and MRI sequences. The type of contrast medium influences the modality of injection guidance, the possibility to perform a combined CT arthrography and MR arthrography examination, as well as the choice of MRI sequences. An optimal injection technique is required for a satisfactory joint assessment. Eventually, classical MRI sequences are advantageously supplemented by new tridimensional gradient echo sequences allowing high spatial resolution and kinematic imaging.
