CNS infection

Infections of the CNS are associated with high morbidity and mortality. They may be classified according to the anatomical component affected: extradural, meningeal, subdural, parenchymal (brain/spine). Causative organisms include bacteria, viruses, parasites, fungi and prions. Management aims are prompt recognition of acute infection of the CNS, rapid identification of causative organisms and initiation of treatment with optimal management of complications. Close liaison with the microbiology and infectious disease teams is imperative.1
