The Clinical Pictures and Survival Analysis of Colorectal Cancer Patients Less Than or Equal to 40 Years of Age – Data from A Single Hospital

PurposeThe purpose of our study was to evaluate the clinical features and survival of colorectal cancer patients 40 years of age and under.Patients and MethodsFrom January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2012, a total of 819 colorectal cancer patients were admitted to our hospital, of which 23 cases (2.8%) were equal to or less than 40 years of age. We analyzed their clinical pictures and compared their prognoses to that of their colorectal cancer counterparts older than 40 years of age.ResultsThe gender distribution, staging, histological grading, and KRAS mutation rate showed no difference between the two groups. Even the incidence of mucinous carcinoma with special histology was 8.3% (in < 40 age group) vs. 3.5% (in > 40 age group), without statistical significance (p = 0.219). Overall, the survival analysis demonstrated there to be no difference in each stage between patients 40 years of age and under, and those patients over 40 years of age.ConclusionsThere was no difference in the clinical features and survival duration of colorectal cancer patients between those patients less than 40 years of age and those more than 40 years of age.
