Productivity alone does not explain species richness of ants - An example from Central Persian deserts

► We evaluate 32 models which explain gradients of ant species richness in deserts. ► We employ information theoretical model selection procedures. ► The productivity model receives the highest support. ► However, other competitive models are likely to become the best model. ► We find strong supportive evidence for the tolerance-productivity model.
