Secondary succession following cultivation in an arid ecosystem: The Owens Valley, California

► We sampled 40 old field sites in the Owens Valley CA and compared vegetational development to that on 17 reference sites. ► Our purpose was to determine if secondary succession has occurred in this arid region. ► Two successional pathways were observed. ► Our results support the concept that secondary succession does occur in arid regions.
