Monitoring the evolution of cloud phase profile using MSG data

Cloud phase is a key parameter in cloud microphysics. The vertical profile of cloud phase has a major role in precipitation formation processes and cloud electrification. Active sensors, such as Lidar, can be used to derive cloud phase vertical profile, but these measurements are limited due to the narrow spatial coverage and low repetition time. Passive sensors, such as MSG-SEVIRI, have much better spatial coverage and temporal resolution but retrieve phase information only from cloud tops. Here we present a methodology to gain information on cloud phase vertical profile of cloud system from MSG data. The 15 min cycle of MSG is used to monitor vertical phase development providing additional information on precipitation and electrification. An application is presented to lucid the usage of the cloud phase vertical profile. Clouds growing over polluted air mass are shown to have more supercooled water tops and wider mixed phase region, while full glacition take place at extreme temperatures.
