► We describe an asymmetric partnership formation model. ► The model is fitted to UK data on sexual activity. ► The model is applied to an STD and illustrates the importance of accurate reporting. ► Reports by women can be used for lower bound estimates of STD incidence. ► Reports by men can be used for upper bound estimates of STD incidence.
