► Tidal flow conditions the hydrodynamics and salinity of water in the wetland. ► In natural areas surface water and groundwater show a saline stratification. ► Tidal wave range and fluctuation are the main variables regulating wetland hydrology. ► In human-altered areas the levels and salinity of water show no periodic variations.
