A new spiral warhead structure is proposed, whose self-rotation causes the failure of concrete and improves the penetration performance of the projectile. The penetrating performance of this proposed spiral projectile and the traditional oval projectile were also simulated under the same condition. Numerical results show that the spiral projectile's residual velocity and residual proportion of the kinetic energy are higher than that of oval projectile by 28.2% and 28.7% at most, respectively. This work introduces the specific law between different rotation angle and residual velocity when concrete target subjected to spiral warhead impacts ranging from 700Â m/s-1000Â m/s. It also gives the rotational angular velocity vs time curves for different initial velocities and rotation angles. Additionally, in order to verify the modeling methods and selected materials parameters, the structural dynamic response and failure behavior of reinforced concrete subjected to oval projectile impacts at different velocities is studied numerically with the finite element software LS-DYNA. The numerical results are in good agreement with the experimental phenomenon and data obtained by Hanchak, SJ et al.[1].
