A micellar polyoxometalate catalyst [C16H33N(CH3)3]7[PW10Ti2O38(O2)2] was prepared and used for catalytic wet air oxidation of thiocyanate (SCN−). The 97.6% removal efficiency was obtained with oxygen and under room conditions. And the oxidation of SCN− was achieved completely leading degradation products SO42−, HCO3−, NH4+ and NO3− within 150 min. The leaching test showed that the POM micellar catalyst had excellent stability and could be used as heterogeneous catalyst for about five times.
Graphical AbstractPolyoxometalate micellar catalyst: a facile, ecologically friendly method for degradation of thiocyanate under room conditions had been explored using oxygen as the oxidant within short time by micellar POM catalysts.Figure optionsDownload as PowerPoint slideResearch Highlights
► A polyoxometalate micellar catalyst [C16H33N(CH3)3]7[PW10Ti2O38(O2)2] had been prepared using simply method.
► By it, thiocyanate could be completely oxidized to simple ions under mild conditions.
► Cheap oxidant molecular oxygen was used to achieve the oxidant.
► This micellar POM catalyst was stable during five reaction cycles.
