Cost of government and firm value

► We study the effects of local government expenditures on listed firms in China. ► High cost of government lowers firm value, performance and productivity. ► Governments that spend more collect more taxes and fees from companies. ► Governments that spend more cut spending on social welfare and infrastructures. ► Our results are consistent with the “grabbing hand” hypothesis of government.
