Sources and downward fluxes of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the open southwestern Black Sea

► This study addresses PAH export via sinking particles in the open SW Black Sea. ► Concentrations and flux of PAHs were monitored on a 1 year sediment trap deployment. ► Both petrogenic and pyrolytic PAH are found in the study area. ► PAH flux variations were controlled by emissions and marine productivity. ► High biogenic fluxes enhance the vertical export of PAHs to deep Black Sea waters.
