► Biodegradation of coking plant soil organic matter was studied. ► Coal tar had a toxic effect on the microbial population. ► Biodegradation of coal and coking plant soil kerogen induced formation of low MW alkanes. ► The coking plant soil exhibited the highest biodegradation efficiency.
