Biomarker signatures from Neoproterozoic-Early Cambrian oil, western India

► We examined biomarkers and stable carbon isotopes from oils from western India. ► Biomarkers indicate organic matter was deposited in highly saline, anoxic environment. ► Biomarkers and isotopes provide evidence for the Proterozoic age of the oil.
