Bacteriohopanepolyols in a stratified cyanobacterial mat from Kiritimati (Christmas Island, Kiribati)

► Bacteriohopanepolyol (BHP) content and distributions in a stratified cyanobacterial mat examined. ► Results indicate key autotrophic Cyanobacteria as minor source for BHPs. ► C-2 methylated BHPs only in a deep layer where heterotrophic bacteria predominate. ► BHP maximum correlates with the redoxcline in the mat.
