Biomarkers for aerobic methanotrophy in the water column of the stratified Gotland Deep (Baltic Sea)

► Stratified water column of Gotland Deep (Baltic Sea) was investigated for biomarkers. ► Bacteriohopanepolyols and phospholipid FAs indicated presence of type I methanotrophic bacteria in suboxic zone. ► Composition of bacteriohopanepolyols from suboxic zone was reflected in upper sediment layers.
