Evolution of organic matter in lignite-containing sediments revealed by analytical pyrolysis (Py-GC-MS)

► Mine soils in the Lusatian district (Germany) contains lignite and recent OM. ► Py-GC-MS was used to monitor C sources and degradation in contrasting environments. ► It was possible to discern OM sources, both from lignite and from the vegetation. ► OM protection prevailed in submerged areas, degradation in land-water interfaces. ► Evidence for C preservation via “quenching” with S and plant derived lipids.
