► The paper deals with a geochemical study of 26 bituminous mixtures unearthed at Kavuşan Höyük in Turkey. ► Gross properties were compared to what is published on many other archaeological sites in the Near East. ► The bitumen source was searched by comparing archaeological samples to oil seeps and crude oils from SE Turkey.
