► Structures of very-long-chain alkanediols and their monoacetates were identified. ► These were localized in cuticular waxes covering the petal surfaces of Cosmos bipinnatus. ► Their tissue surface coverage was quantified. ► Monoacetate isomers despite potential interconversion were distinguished and quantified.
