Distribution of lignin and its coniferyl alcohol and coniferyl aldehyde groups in Picea abies and Pinus sylvestris as observed by Raman imaging

► Chemical maps of cells from two common conifers were constructed with Raman imaging. ► No differences were found in lignin/cellulose distributions between the two species. ► Clear distinction was found in coniferyl alcohol and aldehyde distributions.
