Characterization of a xylose containing oligosaccharide, an inhibitor of multidrug resistance in Staphylococcus aureus, from Ipomoea pes-caprae

CHCl3-soluble extracts from flowers of Ipomoea pes-caprae, through preparative-scale recycling HPLC, yielded three linear hetero-pentasaccharides of jalapinolic acid, pescapraeins XVIII-XX, which displayed resistance-modifying activity against strains of Staphylococcus aureus possessing multidrug efflux pumps.
