Evolution of morphine biosynthesis in opium poppy

Although (S) - reticuline occurs in almost all 1000 plant species which accumulate benzylisoquinoline alkaloids, the occurrence of promorphinan and morphinan alkaloids, such as salutaridine and morphine, is restricted to only a few species. The regulation and evolution of this exceptional biosynthetic capacity is discussed.
