Evolution of metabolic diversity in polyketide-derived pyrones: Using the non-colinear aureothin assembly line as a model system

The structurally intriguing nitro aryl compounds aureothin and neoaureothin are representatives of highly functionalized polyketide-derived pyrones. In this review, non-canonical pathway enzymes governing molecular diversity, underlying evolutionary processes, and strategies to increase pyrone diversity are highlighted.
