Highly active Ru2P/MCM-41 and RuP/MCM-41 catalysts were synthesized by thermal decomposition of ruthenium chloride and hypophosphite precursors. The effect of experimental conditions on the final products is discussed. The results of investigation show that the reaction mechanism of ruthenium phosphide is different from nickel phosphide. Catalytic properties were tested for the hydrodesulfurization of dibenzothiophene and hydrodenitrogenation of quinoline. The results showed that both Ru2P/MCM-41 and RuP/MCM-41 catalysts exhibited higher activities than Ru/MCM-41.
