Mesoporous and nanosized cobalt aluminate spinel with high specific surface area was prepared using microwave assisted glycothermal method and used as soot combustion catalyst in a NOx + O2 stream. For comparison, zinc aluminate spinel and alumina supported platinum catalysts were prepared and tested. All samples were characterised using XRD, (HR)TEM, N2 adsorption–desorption measurements. The CoAl2O4 spinel was able to oxidise soot as fast as the reference Pt/Al2O3 catalyst. Its catalytic activity can be attributed to a high NOx chemisorption on the surface of this spinel, which leads to the fast oxidation of NO to NO2.
