• We design a reconfigurable plasma channel bases on the surface-PIN diode array.
• A reconfigurable plasma channel can be achieved by selectively turning on or off these PIN diodes.
• We obtain an optimized parameters for the achievement of plasma channel with reconfigurable frequencies by simulation.
• The related experimental research results indicate the practicability of the plasma channel.
Solid plasma channel has attracted many attentions in the area of reconfigurable antenna for its great performance in signal transmission, low processing cost and high integration. In this paper, we design a reconfigurable monopole antenna based on surface-PIN diode array, which comprises a metal rod and 28 PIN diodes. By turning these PIN diodes on or off selectively, a reconfigurable antenna with different frequencies can be achieved. We theoretically analyze the effect of PIN diode size, the gap size and the filling materials between PIN diodes on the performance of a Si-based plasma channel and obtain optimized parameters for the achievement of antenna with reconfigurable frequencies of 14.5 GHz, 17.6 GHz, 22.68 GHz. We have also carried out the related experimental research. These research results indicate the practicability of the PIN diodes used for reconfigurable antenna.
