Exploring the unexpected pyridine- and 4,4′-bipyridine-catalyzed isomerization of maleic acid: A DFT approach

► In this study we calculated the bipyridine-catalyzed isomerization of maleic acid. ► The study revealed that the rate-limiting step dependent on the reaction solvent. ► Linear correlation was found between activation and the dielectric constant of the solvent.
