Strong violet emission from zinc oxide dumbbell-like microrods and nanowires

► ZnO crystals were prepared by hydrothermal method. ► The mechanisms for the formation of ZnO crystals were discussed. ► Violet photoluminescence bands were observed from ZnO crystals. ► Violet emission corresponds to the electron transition from the level of interstitial Zn to the valence band.
