Alloy formation in the Co/Pd{111} system - A study with medium energy ion scattering and scanning tunnelling microscopy

► Co thin films on Pd{111] exhibit evidence of both fcc and hcp structures. ► Annealing causes gradual intermixing of Co and Pd. ► Domains of an ordered CoPd alloy are identified. ► Moiré structures and dislocation networks are observed across a range of compositions.
