Phenol removal efficiencies of sewage treatment processes and ecological risks associated with phenols in effluents

► Fifty different phenols were identified and determined in sewage water and effluents. ► Phenols removal efficiencies in different treatment processes were investigated. ► We concluded the most suitable process for removal of phenols from wastewater. ► Two different phenols posed an ecological risk to receiving waters.
