► The role of mGlu receptors in synaptic plasticity and learning is addressed. ► Attention is placed on very long-lasting plasticity (persisting for hours and days). ► The role of mGlu receptors in memory associated with LTP & LTD is also addressed. ► We postulate that mGlu receptors are critical for hippocampal plasticity and memory.
