Safety assessment of gamma-glutamylcysteine sodium salt

► γ-Glutamylcysteine (GGC) is a potential therapy for chronic glutathione depletion. ► The safety of GGC sodium salt was tested according to OECD toxicology protocols. ► GGC sodium salt was not acutely toxic in Wistar rats at 2000 mg/kg body weight. ► GGC sodium salt had a NOAEL of at least 1000 mg/kg/day for repeated oral dose. ► GGC sodium salt should be considered suitable for GRAS status.
