Longitudinal elastic properties and porosity of cortical bone tissue vary with age in human proximal femur

► Human femoral neck and shaft samples were evaluated by means of acoustic microscopy. ► The values of elastic coefficient (c33) varied significantly between skeletal sites. ► Significant variation in c33 was seen between quadrants of the cross-sections. ► Age-related increase in cortical porosity and bone tissue stiffness was observed.
