A new method of segmentation of compact-appearing, transitional and trabecular compartments and quantification of cortical porosity from high resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomographic images

► StrAx1.0 accurately and reproducibly segments cortical and trabecular compartments, and the transitional zone, from high resolution images. ► Segmenting the transitional zone minimizes erroneous apportioning of cortical fragments to trabecular bone, or thick trabeculae to the cortex. ► Porosity is accurately quantified as averaged void volume fraction in all voxels within each compartment, not just counting void voxels. ► StrAx1.0 accurately and reproducibly quantifies porosity below, as well as above, the voxel size of 82 μm from HRpQCT images.
