► Higher serum uric acid (UA) levels are associated with higher absolute bone mineral density (BMD) in women. ► The association between serum UA and BMD remained after accounting for known and potential confounders, including LM and FM. ► Higher serum UA levels were associated with lower annual rates of change in BMD at all skeletal sites. ► Rates of change in lumbar spine BMD remained associated with serum UA concentrations after accounting for confounders, including LM and FM.
