The ζ potential of pyrite and pyrite–carbofuran suspensions was examined as a function of pH by electrokinetic mobility measurements. The pHIEP of pyrite was approximated to 1.70 when inert conditions were maintained. The pHIEP shifted from ∼1.70 to ∼3 and the ζ potential had increased indicating intimate interactions of carbofuran with the pyrite surface. The IR spectral variations in the lattice vibration region, i.e. 700–1100 cm−1 offered confirmatory evidence for the chemisorption of carbofuran. Carbofuran degraded upon prolonged contact with the pyrite.
IR data confirmed pyrite mediated partial degradation of carbofuran.Figure optionsDownload as PowerPoint slideHighlights
► We examined the variations of zeta potential of pyrite suspensions in the presence of carbofuran.
► Carbofuran mediated systems created two regions of pHIEP.
► Specific bonding of carbofuran on pyrite.
► Catalytic role of pyrite in slow partial degradation of carbofuran is evidenced.
► Pyrite as a Fenton like reactivity center for pollution control.
