The antidepressant sertraline prevents the behavioral and EEG changes induced in two animal models of seizures

► The anticonvulsant action of the antidepressant sertraline was investigated. ► Sertraline inhibited tonic-clonic seizures in two different seizure animal models. ► Sertraline also inhibited the EEG epileptiform activity induced by 4-AP and by PTZ. ► Those sertraline actions were dose-dependent and comparable to carbamazepine. ► These findings are relevant as depression is common in epileptic patients.
