► SWD are preceded by changes in network communication and spectral precursor activity. ► SWD precursor activity is most pronounced in the deep somatosensory-cortex. ► Preictal decoupling of RTN turns thalamo-cortical system in a proepileptic state. ► The posterior thalamic nucleus shows strongest and widest network synchrony.
