Gene expression studies in autism: Moving from the genome to the transcriptome and beyond

► Autism is a highly heritable and genetically heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorder. ► Genome-wide analyses of gene expression provide information on genome function and thus are a valuable complement of genetic approaches. ► We review recent transcriptomic studies of autism and discuss their contribution to deciphering autism genetics.
