Transplantation of bone marrow mononuclear cells decreases seizure incidence, mitigates neuronal loss and modulates pro-inflammatory cytokine production in epileptic rats

► Bone marrow mononuclear (BMC) cells were transplanted to epileptic rats. ► Marked reduction in frequency and duration of seizures were observed. ► Treatment with BMCs decreased neuronal loss and/or induced an endogenous neurogenesis. ► BMCs transplantation downregulated the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines mRNA. ► BMCs transplantation upregulated the expression of IL-10 in the brain.
