► Newborn granule cells generated after stroke are recruited for different behavioral tasks. ► Sensorimotor task activates more newborn neurons than spatiotemporal task. ► Enriched environment or running did not affect ratio of recruited new neurons after stroke. ► Spatial pattern of activated newborn neurons depends on the behavioral task.
